GenOn Holdings, Inc. Announces Retirement of Dickerson Coal Plant

Plant has served Maryland since 1959

(Houston, Texas, May 15, 2020) GenOn Holdings, Inc. announced today that it has initiated the process to retire the three coal-fired electric generating units located at its Dickerson, Maryland generating station.

The three coal units comprise approximately 540 megawatts of electric generating capacity. Dickerson Units 1, 2, and 3 came on-line in 1959, 1960, and 1962 respectively and have safely and reliably served the electric needs of Maryland and the surrounding area for the past 60 years.

The decision to initiate the retirement of the Dickerson coal units is driven by unfavorable economic conditions and increased costs associated with environmental compliance. Deactivation of the coal fired units is subject to a 90-day reliability review period by PJM. Once the PJM review period is complete, GenOn will initiate a deactivation process and a step plan reduction in the workforce at the Dickerson site. GenOn will provide benefits common in this situation to all affected employees, including severance payments and access to healthcare.

GenOn will continue to operate the approximately 31 2 megawatts of natural gas and oil-fired generating capacity also located at the Dickerson site.
